Summer announcements!
A reading in Montreal! Casting call in NYC! Final stretch of fundraising!
Dear friends,
I’m writing this with one butt cheek on my airplane seat, the rest is taken by my sleeping daughter; even in this position, it feels luxurious to have this moment of quiet.
In the airport, my daughter and another toddler were each watching something on a phone, and the woman in front of me, whose daughter was watching a show about a plastic doll bouncing around in a plastic ball bit, joked: c’est le fin de la culture / it’s the end of culture.
I agree with the sentiment, but I’ve also discovered I’m not a purist. I’m more of an “all is fair in love and war and illness and airports” kind of person; whatever it takes to get through. We are on our way back from my sister’s wedding. Nothing we create can compare with these meaning-making ceremonies, in which love and grief and absence and pride are always swirling together and taking me by surprise and making me tear up at the slightest hint of an “I love you, son.” We rehearsed an hour before the wedding and that was maybe the moment I felt most proud of my sister, keeping calm when everyone was late, thinking on their feet when a transition flopped, even taking a moment to revel in delight at the Shakespeare-play-like image of all of us leaning out the hotel windows. The theater of life reveals itself in our most heightened moments. In the interim, we make art and see art to get through.

A reading of The Cycles in Montreal! | July 23rd
6 pm, FOFA Gallery at Concordia University, 1515 Rue Sainte-Catherine, Montréal, QC. Directed by Caitlin Ryan O’Connell. Featuring performers Luiza Dale, Emma Zakes Green, and Hope Kronman. 🖤 Free!
The reading will be presented as part of The Let Down Reflex, Redux, an exhibition that attempts to recognize the complexities of parenting in the art world, and asks if a better alternative for families can exist. (I’m so excited to participate in this show as the initial idea for The Cycles was inspired by my visit to The Let Down Reflex exhibition ten years ago at the Elizabeth Foundation! This show marks the ten-year anniversary of the landmark exhibition).

Final stretch of our fundraiser for kUnST fEsT!
While in the throes of new motherhood, Lisa Clair, and Kate Kremer and I tended to our writing, stealing moments within the vortex of caring for new life to reflect on it all. Our plays found their way into each other’s inboxes and we were startled to find how in conversation they were with one another. So we decided to make a festival to share each other’s works, no longer in isolation but in community—with one another, and hopefully eventually with you! We’re SO close to our total festival budget of 60k! Help us make our final 8k stretch of our fundraiser to support all our collaborating artists! And thank you SO MUCH to everyone who has supported us already. Our hearts are full.
Ticket link coming real soon, but for now, save the dates! Sept 15–20th for our festival!
xx

Summer fun, including Guignol in the park (which was joyful for River the first time and terrifying the second. Too many decapitated puppets, I think).
